Nicole Crosby (she/they)
Hi there, I'm Nicole! I’m a queer, neurodiverse and differently abled student intern at Affirming You. I'm in my final year of the Master of Social Work program at ASU and have been in the behavioral health field for over three years. I'm passionate about utilizing strengths-based and trauma informed approaches to support individuals in understanding their inner experiences. My goal is to maintain a safe environment to explore your inner world, while emphasizing your own ability and agency.
Previously I've worked with legal system involved adolescents and adults as they navigate the deep trauma that police and legal system contact can create. More recently I've been involved in community organizations that support individuals moving through the immigration process and advocate for equitable social policy within the immigration system. These experiences have shaped my passion for human rights, social justice, and equity for all, which are values that I center in my therapy practice. Rather than pathologizing individuals' situational responses, I honor them as adaptive skills developed through previous experience while working with clients to develop additional coping skills.
I integrate several different modalities into my practice, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and harm reduction approaches to substance use interventions. I also integrate aspects of narrative and somatic therapy into sessions, especially when working with individuals who are interested in interrogating the ways that oppressive structures have affected their mental and physical health. These approaches have also shaped the way that I manage my own chronic illness and disability, and are distinctly applicable to individuals moving through their health journey.
Though I've spent three years in Phoenix, I am a native Texan and spent nearly a decade in New York City. I spend lots of time knitting, sewing, and lounging with my three cats. I love dungeons and dragons and anything else fantasy or sci fi, and find that escape into stories helps me to stay open and curious to those around me. I look forward to working with you!
